6/12/2015 By Dana Fager (Japanese follows. What can international exchange foster? You may think of cultural understanding or linguistic proficiency. But the opportunities are vast. What about technological innovation and entrepreneurial spirit? Japan currently exhibits a comparatively low level of entrepreneurial activity. But Binnovative’s founders, Japanese citizens active in the Greater Boston area, experience daily the never-give-up attitudes, the whirlwind innovation, and the courageous entrepreneurial spirit of technological geniuses and difference makers who call Boston home. How can these Japanese citizens living in Boston share such an exciting world with Japanese citizens living in Japan? Binnovative fills the gap: It is a platform for sharing ideas and collaborating on cross-cultural projects. Binnovative utilizes online communication tools to allow Japanese citizens who are open to unique, non-traditional paths to meet experienced, successful innovators from the Boston area. Japanese people who are interested in entrepreneurship and innovation can seek advice from the Boston experts. And entrepreneurial folks in Japan seeking like-minded global citizens can turn to Binnovative for an active, inspirational community. An important goal of Binnovative is to raise awareness and instill in Japanese youth an curiosity for innovation and entrepreneurship. There is nothing more fulfilling than seeing young people light up with enthusiasm as they develop a business plan or create a product or service that bridges cultures and has a positive social impact. Through events led by Binnovative, members and participants gain valuable skills necessary for success in today’s global, hands-on workplaces. Through the experiences provided to its members and event participants, Binnovative endeavors to bring about a brighter future not only for the nation of Japan, but also for the world.
Binnovativeのミッションステートメントについて – ”entrepreneurial mindsets” / Binnovative’s Mission Statement -”entrepreneurial mindsets” (By Eriko)
5/10/2015 by Eriko Nishimoto (English follows. そして出来上がったものがこれ: 「Binnovative empowers communities in Japan and Boston to foster entrepreneurial mindsets and multicultural perspectives through cross-cultural collaborative projects. (English) It has been about one year since Binnovative launched. With support from a number of people, I am confident in saying that we have been able to offer valuable experiences at every single event we have held. Nonetheless, even after one full year of operations, expressing what Binnovative does in a concise manner, especially to those from Japan, remains challenging. As the number of staff doubled and tripled, it also became clear that a clear understanding of our mission was not necessarily shared among the staff. At the end of last year (2014), in order for all of us to be on the same page, we recrafted our mission statement. Here is what we came up with: “Binnovative empowers communities in Japan and Boston to foster entrepreneurial mindsets and multicultural perspectives through cross-cultural collaborative projects.” Notice how we used the phrase “entrepreneurial mindsets,” rather than putting down “entrepreneurship.” The nuances of “entrepreneurship” differ surprisingly in Japanese culture and in American culture, which surely made understanding Binnovative’s mission harder for those from Japan. “Entrepreneurship” simply means “starting a new business” in Japan. Thus, when I tell Japanese people that Binnovative aims to foster entrepreneurship, the usual responses are ones like, “Are you trying to be an accelerator or an incubator?” or “Are you working with venture capital firms?” So here is what the phrase “entrepreneurial mindsets” means to Binnovative. To be completely honest, nevertheless, my definition of “entrepreneurship” has changed dramatically after my two years at Babson College pursuing my MBA degree. Before coming to Babson, I did not quite know why Babson is said to have the best education for entrepreneurial studies. I was even thinking to myself, “Is the percentage of Babson alumni who start their own businesses very high? Some MBA students are sponsored by their companies, too. Do those sent by their companies start their own projects upon returning to the companies?” After my two years at Babson, I now consider “entrepreneurship” to be more about mindsets. Simply put, “entrepreneurship” means to demonstrate ownership of one’s actions. At the very least, this is the “entrepreneurship” Binnovative aims to foster. In Japan, students learn almost exclusively from their teachers. We do not speak up nearly as much as the students in the U.S. do. We are supposed to always follow the rules, which is thought to be “the right thing to do.” Many professionals are prohibited from having a second job in addition to that with the company for which they work. Those that work for one company for a long time are looked up to more than those who frequently change jobs. We rarely think about starting something new. In such an environment, even simply finding one’s own passion can be difficult. Under the Abe Administration, many policy changes are being made to advocate for “entrepreneurship” or “innovation.” This does not mean, however, that the mentalities of Japanese people will change overnight. Binnovative hopes to cultivate “entrepreneurial mindsets” through collaborative projects in which participants of various backgrounds are encouraged to interact with one another and strive to achieve a shared goal.

Binnovative organized International Space Apps Challenge Boston 2015 (ISAC2015
The hackathon, commissioned by NASA to seek participation from people around the world, is held in 130 locations. Over 12,500 people participated this year. In this global mass-collaborative event, participants spend 27 continuous hours solving NASA’s problem statements a.k.a challenges for the year. This year’s challenges fell into four themes – Earth, Outer Space, Humans, and Robotics. The exploration of space is, by necessity, a unified international effort – and diversity of experiences and perspectives inevitably produce a better product. Binnovative, which brought this event to Boston last year, has been organizing it in accordance with its mission of bringing together Japanese and Boston communities in a spirit of collaboration. The Boston venue participants include students and professionals from both Boston and Japan forming ‘mixed teams’ – teams including members from both locations. The NASA International Space Apps Challenge (ISAC) 2015 took place on Saturday, April 11th and Sunday, the 12th, lasting 27 hours. More than 60 participants at the Boston event gathered at hack/reduce early in the morning on Saturday. They were joined by students, academics, and professionals from Tokyo, Tokyo University, and Kumamoto via Google Hangouts. Seventeen teams were formed, including eight mixed teams. The event was officially kicked off by Consul General Himeno from the Consulate-General of Japan in Boston preceded by speeches from two event sponsors – IBM and Polar Beverages. The environment at hack/reduce was one of fervent energy with everyone working on their projects vigorously throughout the day and only emerging for a break when it was time for food. Some participants opted to take naps after working all night long, but many worked non-stop without sleep! Projects were due by Sunday at noon — participants gave all the energy they had left to finish their submissions. Thirteen teams including all eight mixed teams successfully submitted their projects on time. These projects included hardware, software, data analysis, and design. After presentations and project demonstrations, the judges convened to decide the winners. In the meantime, the participants voted for the ‘People’s Choice Award’. The high quality of submissions meant the judges had a hard time deciding the winners. Mixed teams, with both Japanese and Boston team members, won 1st and 2nd place in the Boston location as well as the ‘People’s Choice’ and ‘Best use of IBM Bluemix’ local awards – a testament to the power of cross-cultural collaboration. The closing ceremony finished just after 3 o’clock on Sunday — 30 hours after hacking started! Top teams from each location have been nominated for global judging, the winners of which will be invited by NASA to witness the next space launch. Sponsors(ご協賛) IBM hack/reduce Polar E 55, Inc.
